WORK

  • Etiquette: When meeting an Emirati woman, do not offer to shake her hand unless she extends hers first. Public displays of affection are not allowed and can lead to arrest and jail time. Do not beckon or ask someone to come to you with your finger. If you wish to use a hand gesture, use the whole palm and fingers. It is important to use your right hand for eating, drinking, and accepting refreshments.

LIVING

  • Transportation: Taxis are cheap and available in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. After 10:00 p.m., some taxis add a surcharge, but it's still affordable. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have public bus systems that cost as little as a few dirham for a day pass. Sharjah has a small bus network operated by local authorities. Dubai's bus system is extensive and requires a Nol card to ride. Dubai has a train system called the Dubai Metro with two lines, the Red Line and the Green Line. The Red Line runs along the coast and connects the inner city with landmarks, including the airport. The Green Line runs through the center of the city.
  • Food: Emirati cuisine is traditional Arabic cuisine that is similar to cuisines from neighboring countries. The UAE's modern diet is multicultural. Seafood has been the mainstay of the Emirati diet for centuries. Emirati cuisine reflects the region's Arabian heritage and exposure to various civilizations over time. Pork is not included in Arab menus because Muslims are prohibited from eating it. Lamb and mutton are favored meats in Emirati cuisine, more than goat and beef.
  • Dress Code: While non-Arabs and non-Muslims have some freedom in their attire, they should still dress modestly and show respect for local customs. Women should avoid revealing clothing, and men and women should not walk around in swimwear outside of the beach or pool.
  • Religion: Non-Muslims should not eat, drink, or smoke during Ramadan.
  • Public Behavior: Avoid taking photographs of mosques, military installations or other people, especially Arab women.  Avoid showing the soles of your feet or pointing your foot at anyone. Crossing your legs and sitting in front of an important guest or official is also deemed rude. Public displays of affection are not allowed and can lead to arrest and jail time. Co-habitation, sex outside marriage, having a baby out of wedlock, adultery, and homosexuality are strictly prohibited.  Appearing drunk in public, driving, swearing, or making rude gestures can lead to heavy penalties.
  • Illegal Items: The importation of pork products, and pornography is strictly forbidden. Trafficking, smuggling and possession of drugs can result in severe penalties.
