WORK

  • Requirements: Filipino workers in Taiwan must apply for an Alien Residence Certificate (ARC), and your employer has to apply you for a Work Permit.
  • Medical Examination: Filipino workers should undergo medical examination within 3 days of arrival, and within 30 days before or after the 6th, 18th, and 30th month of employment.
  • Bills: Pay your income taxes, labor insurance (except for domestic workers), National Health Insurance share (NHI), and broker's fees through monthly deductions.
  • Brokerage System: There are Taiwan manpower agencies that collect broker’s service fee in exchange for certain services.
  • Rights and Protection: Foreign workers are protected by the Taiwan Labor Standards Law, except domestic workers. DWs are protected by the provisions of their employment contracts. Employers cannot keep the worker's passport, ARC, and money. Do not use your passport as collateral from lending establishments.
  • Working Period: Cumulative working period in Taiwan is only until 12 years only, except for household caretakers who can stay up to 14 years. You cannot leave the company or terminate the contract without due process or the approval of the Council of Labor Affairs. After your work in Taiwan, do not hand your SIM cards to another person and immediately close your bank accounts if you are not coming back.

LIVING

  • Respectful Gestures: Nod or give a slight bow when greeting someone. Putting an arm around someone’s shoulder, winking, or pointing with your index finger is considered rude behavior. Handshakes are common for male friends. Let a third person introduce you instead of introducing yourself. Feets are dirty, so never use them to move or point objects.
  • When around kids, don’t touch their head or hand as this may be harmful for the child.
  • Try to learn a few words of Chinese to show interest in the language and culture of Taiwan. Compliment the health of the elderly and politely deny compliments given to you.
  • Public Behavior: Always be calm and composed.
  • Transportation: Their transport system is safe, clean, reliable, and reasonably priced.
  • Cuisine: Taiwanese cuisine  has many variations, including Hoklo, Aboriginal, Hakka, and local Japanese and Chinese derivatives. Beef is less common and some Taiwanese refrain from eating it.
