WORK

  • Respect and Courtesy: Always ask people politely on how they would like to be called. Take business cards with two hands, read with great interest and put it in front of you facing down. Avoid making any marks on it in front of the person who gave it to you.
  • Socializing and Networking: During work get togethers, keep everyone’s glass full, especially the older or higher-status person by saying "han jan deo badeuseyo" (let me refill your glass) politely. Wait for the youngest person to fill your glass. Always accept the drink that was offered to you by the older and higher-status person.
  • Tradition: Writing someone's name in red ink is considered bad luck.
  • Days Off: In most cases, employees who do not miss a day of work in a full year are entitled to a 15-day paid vacation, and an additional day for each two years of service (maximum of 25 days). Best to check with your employer.

LIVING

  • Eating: Try popular Korean cuisines such as bulgogi (grilled beef), samgyeopsal (grilled pork), japchae (stir fry noodles), kimchi, and bibimbap (rice with assorted toppings). Prepare the table with a spoon, chopsticks, water and other amenities. When settled, the elderly must start their meal first before you.
  • Public Behavior: Be prepared for pushing and shoving in busy places. When you hear someone say, “Pali-pali" move away because they are in a hurry.
  • Transportation: South Korea has an extensive transportation network, including railways, highways, buses, ferries, and air routes. Uber is also available.
