WORK

  • Term of Address: Address colleagues and superiors using "Sayyed" for men and "Sayeeda or Sayedity" for women, and “Madame” for Arab women.
  • Greeting: Say “Salam alaykum” which means “peace be upon you." When responding to this phrase, reply with a "Wa alaykum as-salam" which means “And upon you be peace”.
  • Food: During Ramadan, non-Muslims should also refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public or in front of their employers and associates.

LIVING

  • Transportation: Taxis are the fastest way to travel around the city but haggling for the price is necessary as taxi meters are not commonly used.
  • Public Behavior: Men are not allowed to talk to women in all public places except in hospitals. Social mixing is not allowed in public places such as markets, fast food chains, banks, government offices, and some business establishments. There are separate queues for men and women, and sometimes for singles and families.
  • Clothing: Saudi women wear a black robe called abaya, black veil to cover their hair and a burka or batula which is a mask to cover their faces. Saudi men wear a thob (cotton robe) and ghoutra (head cloth). Note that men cannot enter any beauty parlor.
  • Illegal Possessions or Importation: Acquiring and importing drugs, pornographic materials, and any religious items incompatible with Saudi Arabian laws are strictly prohibited. Gambling is also against the law.
