WORK

  • Dress code: Dress modestly and conservatively,especially during Ramadan. Be sensitive to Islamic culture.
  • Passport: Always carry a copy of your passport with you for proof of identity and citizenship, and employers are not allowed to hold your passport except for visa and immigration processing.

LIVING

  • Religion: Qatar is a Muslim country, but there are also Catholic and Christian churches where OFWs can attend mass.
  • During Ramadan: Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Non-Muslim should avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public or in front of others.
  • Respect: Respect Qatar's culture and religious beliefs. When the Quran is being read, do not disturb them by making any noise or playing music. During prayers, do not stare or walk in front of people who are praying, and do not walk on a prayer mat.
  • Homosexuality and public intimacy: Homosexual activities are illegal and considered a criminal offense in Qatar. Intimacy in public between a men and women, including teenagers, can lead to arrest.
  • Transportation: Mowasalat is the national transport company and operates buses, taxis and limousine service, with buses available at Mowasalat's main bus station in Old Ghanim and at some small grocery stores.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol is not illegal, but there are laws to follow regarding its consumption. It's illegal to import alcohol into the country. Drinking alcohol or being drunk in public is also illegal and can result in deportation, fines, or even prison sentences. Muslims caught drinking may face corporal punishment. Alcohol should not be transported within the country, except for taking it home on the day of collection. It is an offense [to offer alcohol to Muslims and minors. Selling, donating, or giving away alcohol is also not allowed. Foreigners living in Qatar can buy alcohol with a permit system. 
  • Drunk Driving: Offenders can face custodial sentences ranging from one month to three years, a fine, or both. Those caught drunk driving may also be deported. If a police file is opened against someone for a drinking-and-driving-related offense, they are not allowed to leave the country until the case is resolved.
  • Drugs and Gambling: The importation, distribution, and use of any kind of narcotics and pornographic books and materials are strictly forbidden. Any form of gambling is also strictly prohibited.
  • Cuisine: Qatar meals originated mainly from traditional Arab cuisine. Their national dish is Machbūs. Seafood and dates are staple food items in the country.
