LIVING

  • Culture: Omanis strictly observe Islamic practices, especially during Ramadan. Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter mosques in Oman. Omanis are conservative and traditional.
  • Transportation: Public transportation is available in Oman in the form of buses and taxis. The most popular public transport in Oman is the 'Baiza' buses. Taxis are orange and white and not metered, so it's best to negotiate the fare before starting the journey. Large public buses are less popular and more expensive. ONTC (Oman National Transport Corporation) offers regular bus services to various destinations. Women may drive and walk around unescorted in Oman.
  • Food and Dining: Oman dishes are influenced by Arab, Persian, Indian, Asian, Eastern Mediterranean, and African cuisine. Most Omani dishes contain a rich mixture of spices, herbs, and marinades. It's suggested that women should eat in the family room in restaurants. If you decide to cook, pork products are available at licensed food outlets.
  • Etiquette: Omanis are hospitable and friendly, but sensitive about certain issues. Taking photographs, especially of women is strictly forbidden. Women can avoid unwanted attention by dressing conservatively and covering up as much of the arms and legs as possible.
