WORK

  • Working Necessities: Secure your original passport and other travel/working documents in a safe place to avoid being interpreted as an illegal entry. Have a copy of your passport when going out.
  • Remitting Money: Bring your original passport when you remit money to the Philippines.
  • Network Connection: Mobile phones can be used without problems at all times. It’s recommended to use prepaid card when calling inside Malaysia. You may use a prepaid SIM when calling outside the country.

LIVING

  • Common phrases:  Greet people by placing your right hand over your left chest, with a smile. Greetings can be “selamat pagi” for good morning; “selamat tengahari” for good afternoon, and; “selamat malam” for good evening. You may say “apak khabari” when  you are asking how they are; and “khabar baik” for telling you’re fine. “Terima kasih” is saying thank you, while “selamat datang” for saying welcome.
  • Modesty: Muslim ladies acknowledge introductions to gentlemen by nodding and smiling. Men are not supposed to touch women whom they do not know.
  • Public Behavior: Public display of affection such as kissing and embracing in public is frowned upon. Eat or receive things with your right hand. Use your right thumb when there’s a need to point. Don’t show the bottom of your feet to anyone. Practice dressing neatly and conservatively, particularly in sacred places. Remove your caps and footwear when entering religious places.
  • Religion Importance: The government holds the National Quranic Recitation Celebration on the 17th day of Ramadan, which is a public holiday. Muslims recite the Quran in mosques together or gather with their family at home.
  • Cultural and Belief Differences: Avoid discussing ethnic relations and the political system in Malaysia.
  • Illegal activities: Do not drink alcoholic beverages. Do not transport or use illegal drugs.
  • Transportation: You can ride on bus, train, or taxi. Bargaining with taxi drivers is necessary to avoid overpaying.
  • Personal Belongings: Stay alert when crossing the streets to avoid falling prey to criminals.
