WORK

  • Residentials: Obtain your residency permits through the ‘'Corpo de Policia de Seguranca Publica” (Public Security Police Force). Provide the required documents and ask for the help of a work sponsor. 
  • Requirements: All full-time employees in Macau are required to have a 'blue card’ (residency card).
  • Working Permits: Non-resident workers can be given with a skilled or non-skilled worker’s card, and occasional worker's card.
  • Working Time: An 8-hour duty or 48-hours per week is the standard working time in Macau. Government offices are open from 9 AM-5:45 PM on Mondays to Thursdays; and closes at 6PM on Fridays. Most private companies operate until 6 PM and workers are given a 1 and 30 minute lunch break. Most employees in the hospitality industry works 6 times a week for an average of 8.38 hours per day.
  • Days Off:  In most cases, entitled workers have 6 days of paid leave a year, 8 statutory holidays, and 24 consecutive hours of rest for every 7 days of work. Pregnant employees working for more than a year have 35 days of maternity leave. Best to check with your employer.

LIVING

  • Costs: Macau’s housing, food, transport, utilities, and purchasing power are significantly low compared to Hong Kong.
  • Transportation: The main forms of public transport are buses and taxis. A light rail system is currently under construction.
  • Cuisines: Macanese is from the blend of southern Chinese and Portuguese cuisines, with significant influences from Southeast Asia and the Lusophone world. Famous dishes include galinha à Portuguesa, galinha à Africana, bacalhau, pato de cabidela, Macanese chili shrimp, and stir-fried curry kebab.
