WORK

  • Greetings: When someone greets you with “Salam alaykum” (peace be with you), you must respond with “Wa alaykum as-salam” (and also with you). Not responding is considered a sin in Islam.
  • Religion: Discussing about religion, and mentioning Allah, the Quran, or the prophet Mohammad with disrespect is forbidden. Say, Alla ta, ala (the most high) or Qu’ran Elkarim (Holy Qur’an) or Rasul Allah (the messenger of Allah), Abi Mohammad (prophet Mohammad), etc, rather than simply saying “Mohammad." During Ramadan, non-Muslims should also refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public or in front of their employers and associates.
  • Women's Safety: Do not smile at any men you're not familiar with. Be always alert when going out with fellow workers. Travel with a reliable companion when the destination is far away.
  • Employment Contract: When your contract is still active, do not transfer employment.

LIVING

  • Courtesy: Remove your shoes when entering a holy place or someone's home. Do not interrupt or pass in front of someone who is praying in public. Try to learn some Arabic to progress adaptation
  • Cuisine: Kuwait meals is a blend of Arabian, Persian, Indian, and Mediterranean cuisines. Machboos Dakkus (rice dish), Khubz (flat bread) are their famous traditional food.
  • Gestures: Always accept refreshments when offered, but do not offer or consume alcohol with Arabs. Use your right hand when drinking, eating, or receiving something. It is deemed rude to show your soles, cross your legs, or sit in front of an important guest. Avoid tapping people on the back, this is reserved for close friends.
  • Dress Code: Dress modestly, and do not wear revealing clothing.
  • Public Behavior: Do not get involved in political activities of the host country to avoid punishments. Engaging into illegal activities and bribing a policeman can implicate your stay in Kuwait.
