WORK

  • Dress Code: Pack clothes for all four seasons, and extra for long cold days. Dress appropriately and conservatively.
  • Documentation: Learn about the labor laws and your rights as a foreign worker in Jordan and clearly understand the provisions of your employment contract. Foreign workers are expected to sign a similar contract letter in Arabic upon arrival, this is normal, and is a requirement of Jordanian authorities for work visa application. Processing for your Iqama (residence permit) may take long but this is necessary to make your stay in Jordan legal. In exchange, your employer needs your passport to be forwarded to the authorities. Always carry your iqama with you, especially when leaving your employer's premises.
  • Working: Respect your employer's curfew on days off for your safety. Don't bring valuable unnecessary personal documents or jewelry to Jordan, and avoid doing anything inappropriate at work since many employers have CCTV. Talk to your employer a month before if you want to extend or terminate your contract, and don't discuss your salary with other foreign workers to avoid jealousy or envy. Show respect to elderly Arab employers and don't engage in part-time work or any illegal activities like gambling or watching porn. Contact your agency or HR manager if you have any issues, and follow immigration and labor laws to avoid fines or imprisonment.

LIVING

  • Courtesy: Always show the good side of Filipino values and culture while in Jordan. Learn and understand the language to facilitate communication. Respect the culture, practices, and traditions of Jordan. Avoid shaking hands with Arabs of the opposite sex. Do not cook or fry foods that may be considered offensive to Arabs
  • Illegal items: Avoid carrying prohibited items such as illegal drugs, offensive materials, and foods made from pork
  • Religion: Respect religious practices, such as not interrupting or passing in front of someone praying and not eating, drinking, or smoking during Ramadan
  • Safety: Be cautious when interacting with strangers and do not trust easily. Dress appropriately, if not conservatively, in public and private places.
  • Shopping: Haggling is acceptable when shopping in public and open markets
  • Transportation: Choose transportation options carefully, such as taxis or buses. Men should sit in the front seat of a taxi, while unaccompanied women should sit in the back. Buses are cheaper than taxis, but may not have fixed timetables.
