WORK

  • Greetings and Introduction: Bowing is a Japanese culture that shows appreciation, respect, apology or gratitude. Bow when you greet or introduce yourself, especially in a workplace.
  • Dormitories: When staying in dormitories as sleeping and residential quarters for workers, follow the rules and minimize noise to avoid problems with neighbors
  • Business Relationships: Begin business relationships by exchanging business cards, which should be received with both hands. Read the card with great interest.
  • Socializing and Networking: Join your colleagues in taking turns filling each other’s glass. It is considered rude to fill your own glass except when you are among good friends. You might also notice that your glass will be continuously filled even if you say “no, thank you.” Leave your glass full once you have had enough to drink. It's customary to split the bill evenly among everyone at the table.

LIVING

  • Public Conduct: Smoking is prohibited in most indoor public places and outdoor areas.
  • Safety and Security: Police officers patrol in many areas anytime.
  • Delicacies: Noodles and dim sum are the specialty of Hong Kong. Rice may not always be served.
  • Law Protection: Privacy laws are strictly enforced, so it's important to avoid sharing personal information without permission.
  • The Octopus Card: A smart card for public transportation and can also be used for purchases in retail outlets.
