WORK

  • Greetings and Politeness: Always greet your employer and other people with respect. Address people using their titles, such as Mr., Mrs., or Miss.
  • Dress Code: Dress conservatively to maintain decorum and sobriety. Bring sweaters or light jackets when it is winter.
  • Work Etiquette: Be punctual always. Keep from littering, spitting on the ground and improper disposal of chewing gums.
  • Maintain Professionalism: Display good manners at all times by opting to use your palm instead of a chopstick or index finger when pointing at someone. Stay composed especially in public places and keep from arguing about politics or religions. Yelling and expressing bad gestures or comments because of anger is not appropriate and sensible.
  • Restrictions: It is illegal to acquire and use others’ belongings without their permission. Taking snapshots of airports, certain religious and public buildings, especially your employer's house is also prohibited.
  • Authorized Job: Engaging in double jobs or working with an expired visa is illegal. Evaluators check the passport, Hong Kong ID and a copy of employment contract to prevent illegal settlers from staying. Carry these at all times and keep your documents updated for evaluation.
  • Law Protection: Never use your passport as collateral for loan to keep your identity safe and secured. Always carry around your passport and Hong Kong ID for safekeeping. It is illegal for employers or agency to keep it.

LIVING

  • Public Conduct: Smoking is prohibited in most indoor public places and outdoor areas.
  • Safety and Security: Police officers patrol in many areas anytime.
  • Delicacies: Noodles and dim sum are the specialty of Hong Kong. Rice may not always be served.
  • Law Protection: Privacy laws are strictly enforced, so it's important to avoid sharing personal information without permission.
  • The Octopus Card: A smart card for public transportation and can also be used for purchases in retail outlets.
