WORK

  • Introduction: It's not customary to shake hands with a member of the opposite sex. Women shall offer their hands first.
  • Gestures: Use your right hand when giving or receiving items, and also while eating. Use your thumb when pointing, it is rude to use your index finger. Use your right four fingers, with your palm facing down when calling someone over. 
  • Sitting Down: When sitting on the floor, men should sit with legs folded at the knees and crossed at the ankles. While women sit with knees to one side and feet tucked away from view. Sit without showing the soles of your feet.
  • Dress Code: Dress modestly. Avoid wearing sleeveless, shorts, and fitted clothes.

LIVING

  • Punishments: In 2014, Brunei began the introduction of the Sharia Law, and it includes severe punishments for certain crimes such as adultery, theft, homosexual activity,etc.
  • Religion and Beliefs: In Brunei, Muslims are forbidden from consuming pork, cigarettes, and alcohol. Avoid eating, drinking, and smoking in the presence of Muslims who are fasting during Ramadan. Streets are usually empty and quiet by 7 PM because of their Muslim beliefs. Dogs are considered unclean, and contact with dog’s wet hair or saliva may be followed by purification rites.
  • Public Behavior: Public displays of affection are seen as inappropriate. Close proximity in private between an unmarried man and woman is illegal is one party is a Muslim.
  • Tradition: Show respect by taking off your shoes when entering a house. Never touch children's heads as it can cause bad luck.
  • Firearms and Drugs: Never carry firearms, cocaine, and heroin into the country.
